The Leaves

We all know Jimi Hendrix’s version of “Hey Joe.”  The earliest known recording of the song is by a Los Angeles garage band called The Leaves.  It recorded three versions.  The first, which is featured here, was done in 1965.  It then recorded a second version in 1966, but pulled it.  A third version, with a new guitarist, was released later that year and became a hit.

John Prine

Going through a bunch of old records and came across my favorite song from John Prine.  First learned of Prine after hearing Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) and Billy Bragg do a live cover of “Hello In There.”  Other notable covers have been done by Joan Baez, Bette Midler, and 10,000 Maniacs.  Lesser known versions also worth seeking out have been done by Andrew Calhoun and Tim Mccarty.

“Hello In There” is a song that appears on Prine’s S/T debut LP from 1971.  A classic record well worth checking out.  Here is a live performance for the television show Sessions At West 54th.  It was recorded on January 30, 2000.
